Aeonium Mountain Rose

Aeonium dodrantale, commonly known as Mountain Rose, is a compact succulent grown for its beautifully shaped green rosettes. During the warmer, drier part of the year the leaves close tightly together, creating the rose-bud appearance that gives this plant its common name.

As cooler conditions return and active growth resumes, the rosettes gradually open and the plant produces offsets, eventually developing into an attractive cluster. I particularly like the seasonal change in this one — the same plant can look quite different between its summer resting period and its cooler growing season.

Formerly classified as Greenovia dodrantalis, Mountain Rose is native to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where it grows naturally in rocky conditions.

Light: Bright light with some direct sun; protect from intense afternoon summer sun
Water: Water when the growing mix has dried during active growth, and reduce watering considerably during summer dormancy
Humidity: Prefers good airflow and should not remain constantly damp
Growth Habit: Compact, offsetting succulent that gradually forms a cluster of rosettes
