Moss Pole Growing Mix

Airy, moisture-retentive and easier to rehydrate

Urban Jungle Sydney Sphagnum + Coco Chip Pole Mix is designed specifically to fill wire moss poles used for climbing aroids.

The mix combines sphagnum moss and coarse coco chips to create a lightweight, open structure that can hold moisture while still allowing air to move through the pole.

Dense moss poles can dry surprisingly quickly, and once pure sphagnum becomes very dry it can be difficult to re-wet evenly. Adding coarse coco chips helps keep the pole more open, allowing water to move through the material more freely and helping the mix rehydrate more consistently.

This balance also gives aerial roots a loose, fibrous medium to grow into without the pole becoming overly compact.

What’s in the mix

Sphagnum moss — helps retain moisture within the pole and provides a fibrous medium for aerial roots

Coco chips — add coarse structure, improve airflow and help the pole rehydrate more evenly after drying

How to use

Loosely fill a wire moss pole with the mix, avoiding heavy compression. The goal is to keep enough structure in the pole to support the plant while still leaving air spaces throughout the medium.

Once filled, moisten the pole thoroughly and secure the climbing stem so that nodes and aerial roots are positioned against the moist mix.

Keep the pole lightly moist while the plant is actively attaching and rooting into it. If the pole dries significantly, rehydrate it slowly and thoroughly so moisture reaches the full depth of the mix rather than only wetting the surface.
