The Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ is a striking variegated aroid with large, paddle-shaped leaves marbled in cream, white, and multiple shades of green. No two leaves are the same, with some showing big blocks of cream and others a finer speckled pattern, so every plant feels like a one-off piece in your collection. It is a climbing Philodendron, so as it matures and is given proper support, the leaves can become impressively large and architectural. This is a fantastic choice if you love statement foliage and want a rare but forgiving plant that still fits well into a home environment.
Why you’ll love it
- Bold, variegated foliage with creamy-white, mint, and green marbling—no two leaves are alike.
- Naturally climbing habit that produces larger, more dramatic leaves when given a moss pole or totem.
- Considered a rare / collector’s Philodendron, but still relatively tolerant and suitable for intermediate plant keepers.
- Grows to an impressive height indoors (around 1.5–1.8 m with support) and becomes a true focal point in the room.
- Variegation holds best in bright, indirect light, rewarding good care with beautifully patterned new leaves.
Care information
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal to maintain strong variegation; avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the lighter leaf sections, and avoid very low light, which may reduce variegation and slow growth.
Water:
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry, allowing the mix to partially dry between waterings while never staying soggy; reduce frequency slightly in the cooler months while still keeping some gentle moisture in the root zone.
Humidity:
Prefers higher humidity around 60–80% for best growth and leaf quality, but will usually tolerate average indoor humidity; if your air is dry, a humidifier or grouping with other plants will help.
Temperature:
Aim for 20–28 °C and keep it above about 15 °C; protect it from cold draughts, unheated rooms in winter, and hot, dry blasts from heaters or air conditioning.
Soil:
Use a chunky, free-draining Aroid Mix (for example, a blend with orchid bark, perlite, and quality compost) so the roots get both air and consistent moisture without sitting in water.
Support:
This is a climbing Philodendron and will really shine with a moss pole, coir totem, or similar vertical support; training it to climb encourages bigger leaves, better variegation, and a tidier, more upright form. Don't be scared to train the growth direction by using taping between the stem and the pole.
Fertiliser:
Feed with GT Foliage during the warmer growing months, roughly every 4–6 weeks at a reduced strength, and ease off or pause feeding over winter when growth slows.
Toxicity:
This plant is toxic if consumed, so please keep away from children and pets, and avoid ingestion as, like other Philodendrons, it contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals.
