Tevaplanter — Self-Watering, Soil-Free Ceramic Planter
Tevaplanter transforms the traditional planter by turning its outer surface into the growing space. This innovative self-watering system uses a specially engineered porous ceramic vessel to store water internally and gradually diffuse moisture across the exterior, allowing suitable plants to grow directly on the surface without conventional potting mix.
Seeds, moss and small plants are secured to the textured ceramic, where their roots can attach and develop with access to both moisture and air. As the roots and foliage spread around the planter, Tevaplanter gradually becomes a living, ever-changing display—combining plant cultivation with a clean, sculptural design suited to modern interiors.
Particularly well suited to plants that naturally grow against rocks, bark and other surfaces, Tevaplanter offers a fascinating way to grow ferns, mosses, Hoyas, Dischidia, Begonias, selected orchids and small tropical or vining plants. It also allows you to observe roots and new growth developing over time, making it equally appealing to experienced plant collectors, curious beginners and families.
How it works
Fill the internal reservoir with water, then attach suitable seeds, moss or small plants to the exterior using the supplied mounting bands. The porous ceramic gradually draws moisture through its walls, providing consistent hydration directly to the roots.
Check the reservoir regularly and refill it when the water level becomes low. Depending on the temperature, humidity, airflow and plants being grown, this will generally be required every 5–15 days.
Established plants will also require nutrients. Apply a suitable diluted liquid fertiliser directly to the exposed roots according to the needs of the plant being grown. Do not add fertiliser to the internal water reservoir.
Suitable plants
Tevaplanter works best with plants that appreciate consistent root moisture and good airflow, including:
- Ferns
- Mosses
- Hoyas
- Dischidia
- Begonias
- Selected orchids
- Small tropical and vining plants
- Ornamental sprouting seeds such as chia, flax, mustard and watercress
Plant suitability and care requirements will vary between species. Plants or seeds grown on Tevaplanter are intended for ornamental use and should not be consumed.
