Hello from the greenhouse
Hello and welcome to my first Urban Jungle Sydney newsletter.
I’ve wanted a simple way to share a little more of what is happening in the greenhouse, so I’m going to send a note like this about once a month. I won’t bombard your inbox. The idea is to give you a quiet early look at what is growing, what may be returning soon, and the occasional practical plant-care note.
Here are a few plants I’ve been enjoying recently.
In the greenhouse
- Philodendron plowmanii × tenue — exact specimen
- Philodendron Billicosum
- Ficus villosa
- Philodendron ilsemanii — exact specimen

Is it time to repot?
Warmer weather often brings stronger growth, but the season alone is not a reason to move every plant into a larger pot.
Look for signs that the roots are filling the pot, the growing medium has lost its open structure, or the plant’s watering behaviour has noticeably changed. When repotting an aroid, an open, well-draining mix helps excess water move through while retaining useful moisture around the roots. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the existing root ball, keep the drainage holes clear, and avoid pressing the mix down too firmly.
If the plant is growing well and the mix is still in good condition, leaving it alone may be the better choice.
