Greenhouse Notes No. 3 — Air plants and Floresta

A Floresta preview, four Tillandsias and a closer look at Anthurium veitchii.

Originally sent 9 October 2026. This is an archive of that newsletter; product prices and availability were accurate at the time of sending and may have changed.

Floresta is getting closer

Hello from the greenhouse.

October will be a busy month here as I begin preparing plants for Floresta Collector's Plant Market in Paddington. Urban Jungle Sydney will be joining growers, makers and plant collectors from around Australia for the two-day event at the end of the month.

I will share more of what I am taking as the event gets closer. For this note, I wanted to introduce a small group of air plants currently available from the greenhouse and share my guide to growing Anthurium veitchii.

Meet Urban Jungle Sydney at Floresta

Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November 2026
Paddington Town Hall
249 Oxford Street, Paddington NSW

Floresta brings specialist growers, unusual plants, botanical-inspired wares and collectors together in one place. I will confirm my stand location when the organiser releases the final map.

Air plants from the greenhouse

Tillandsias vary considerably in shape, texture, growth habit and how quickly they dry after watering. These four give a good sense of that range.

  • Tillandsia fuchsii f. gracilis — A$30. Fine, silvery foliage radiating from a compact rosette.
  • Tillandsia paleacea — A$30. A stem-forming species that develops into a branching cluster.
  • Tillandsia tenuifolia — A$35. A compact green species that gradually forms a dense cluster.
  • Tillandsia funckiana — A$25. Twisting growth and brilliant red flowers when mature.

Anthurium veitchii: the King Anthurium

Few Anthuriums have the presence of Anthurium veitchii. Its long, deeply corrugated leaves become increasingly impressive as it matures, but growing it well depends on stable light, humidity, temperature, potting mix and feeding rather than constant intervention.

Until next time

I will share more Floresta preparation in the next Greenhouse Notes. In the meantime, if you have a question about one of these Tillandsias or something you have noticed on your own plants this spring, you are welcome to contact me through the website.
