Care
Calathea orbifolia, also known as Goeppertia orbifolia, is a stunning tropical plant prized for its large, round leaves adorned with striking silvery-green stripes. Native to Bolivia, this beauty requires specific care to thrive in Australian homes.
Light Requirements
Calathea orbifolia prefers bright, indirect light. Place your plant in a well-lit room, but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves. An east or north-facing window is ideal, providing gentle morning light while protecting the plant from harsh afternoon rays.
Watering and Humidity
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 5 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Use distilled, rainwater, or filtered water to prevent leaf tip browning caused by fluoride and other minerals in tap water.
Humidity: As a tropical plant, Calathea orbifolia thrives in high humidity. Aim for humidity levels above 60. To increase humidity:
- Mist the leaves 2-3 times a week
- Use a pebble tray filled with water
- Group plants together
- Consider using a humidifier in drier months
Temperature
Maintain indoor temperatures between 18°C to 24°C for optimal growth. Avoid exposing your Calathea to temperatures below 15°C or sudden temperature fluctuations.
Soil and Fertilisation
Use a well-draining, premium potting mix to ensure proper moisture retention without waterlogging. Fertilise fortnightly with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer).
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove any yellow or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth. Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them looking vibrant.
Repotting
Repot your Calathea orbifolia every 1-2 years in spring, using fresh potting mix. Choose a pot one size larger to allow room for growth.
Common Issues
Pests: Watch out for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Brown Leaf Tips: Often caused by low humidity or mineral build-up from tap water. Increase humidity and switch to filtered water.
Curling Leaves: Usually indicates underwatering or low humidity. Adjust your watering routine and increase humidity levels.
