Tillandsia

Tillandsia, commonly known as air plants, are unique epiphytic plants that don't require soil to survive. These fascinating bromeliads absorb moisture and nutrients directly from the air through specialised scales on their leaves. Native to Central and South America, air plants come in over 650 species with diverse forms and textures. They're perfect for modern homes, requiring minimal care - just bright, indirect light and regular misting. Many varieties produce stunning colourful blooms, making them ideal for creative displays and small spaces.

Tillandsia ehlersiana - Plant B

This rare Tillandsia ehlersiana is a beautiful air plant that I'm delighted to offer, originally discovered in the cloud forests of Mexico and named after the German botanist Julius Ehlers in the late 19th century. This charming epiphytic bromeliad belongs to the subfamily Tillandsioideae and is known for its distinctive silvery-green foliage and elegant rosette form, having adapted to absorb moisture and nutrients directly from the air through specialised scales called trichomes that cover its narrow, curved leaves. Why You'll Love It Elegant silvery-green foliage with graceful curved leaves Compact rosette form perfect for small displays Produces stunning pink and purple flower spikes Easy-care air plant ideal for beginners Creates beautiful displays when mounted or in terrariums Care Information Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays. Water: Mist 2-3 times per week or soak for 20-30 minutes weekly. Shake off excess water and ensure good air circulation. Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity with good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Temperature: 15-27°C, minimum 10°C. Protect from frost and extreme temperature fluctuations. Mounting: Mount on driftwood, cork bark, or display in hanging arrangements. Ensure excellent air circulation around the plant. Fertiliser: Feed monthly with diluted GT Foliage applied as a mist during growing season. Toxicity: Non-toxic and safe around children and pets.

Tillandsia diguetii - Plant B

The Tillandsia diguetii is a fascinating air plant native to the coastal regions of northwestern Mexico where it grows as an epiphyte on trees and rocks. This distinctive species was first described by botanist Mez in 1896 and belongs to the subgenus Tillandsia, characterised by its unique bulbous base and twisted, ribbon-like leaves that distinguish it from its close relative, Tillandsia streptophylla. Unlike streptophylla which has a more pronounced pseudobulb and tighter leaf spirals, diguetii features a smaller, less swollen base with longer, more loosely twisted grey-green leaves that create a more open, fountain-like appearance. Why You'll Love It Distinctive bulbous base with long, twisted ribbon-like leaves More open growth form compared to the tighter spirals of T. streptophylla Produces stunning pink and purple flower spikes Hardy coastal species that tolerates varied conditions Creates dramatic sculptural displays when mounted Care Information Light: Bright, indirect light with some direct morning sun. More tolerant of direct sunlight than many air plants. Water: Mist 2-3 times per week or soak for 20-30 minutes weekly. Allow water to drain from the bulbous base to prevent rot. Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity with excellent air circulation around the bulbous base. Temperature: 15-27°C, minimum 10°C. More tolerant of temperature fluctuations than most air plants. Mounting: Mount on driftwood or cork bark, ensuring the bulbous base has excellent drainage and air circulation. Fertiliser: Feed monthly with diluted GT Foliage applied as a mist during the growing season. Toxicity: Non-toxic and safe around children and pets.

Tillandsia tectorum - Fuzzy air plant

The Tillandsia tectorum is an absolutely stunning air plant that I'm thrilled to offer, renowned for its distinctive fuzzy, silvery-white appearance that makes it one of the most visually striking bromeliads available. This remarkable epiphyte is covered in dense trichomes (tiny hairs) that give it an almost snow-white, woolly texture, creating a dramatic contrast against its compact, rosette form and making it appear almost otherworldly in its beauty. I do not recommend keeping this plant indoors. It must be grown in bright light (or full sun), good airflow, and infrequent waterings. Under a tree, verandah or deck, or in a shadehouse are all great locations for this plant. Ensure the area you choose has good air flow to help the plant dry out between waterings.  This plant is around 30 cm wide by 25 cm deep. Why You'll Love It Spectacular fuzzy, silvery-white appearance unlike any other air plant Dense trichomes create a unique woolly texture that's mesmerising to touch Compact rosette form makes it perfect for small spaces and creative displays Extremely drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for low-maintenance collections Produces beautiful purple flower spikes that contrast dramatically against the white foliage Care Information Light: Bright, indirect light with some direct morning sun is ideal. Can tolerate more direct sunlight than most air plants due to its protective trichomes, but avoid harsh afternoon sun. Water: Mist lightly once or twice per week, allowing water to sit briefly on the trichomes before shaking off excess. Avoid soaking this species as the dense, fuzzy coating can trap moisture and cause rot. Humidity: Tolerates lower humidity than most air plants, thriving in 40-60% humidity. Excellent air circulation is essential to prevent moisture retention in the dense trichomes. Temperature: The Ideal temperature range is 15-27°C, with a minimum of 10°C. More tolerant of temperature fluctuations than most air plants due to its hardy nature. Soil: No soil required - this is an epiphytic air plant that absorbs nutrients and moisture through its specialised trichomes. Support: Mount on driftwood, cork bark, or display in open terrariums. Ensure excellent air circulation around the entire plant to prevent moisture buildup. Fertiliser: Feed monthly with heavily diluted GT Foliage applied as a light mist during the growing season. Toxicity: This plant is non-toxic and safe around children and pets.

Tillandsia disticha 'Giant Form'

The Tillandsia disticha 'Giant Form' is an extraordinary air plant that I'm absolutely delighted to offer, thanks to its impressive size and distinctive architectural form. This remarkable bromeliad creates stunning cascading displays with its long, silvery-green leaves that form elegant chains as it produces offsets, making it one of the most dramatic air plants available for collectors seeking something truly spectacular. Why You'll Love It Impressive size that's significantly larger than the standard disticha variety Creates beautiful cascading chains of silvery-green foliage Produces stunning pink and purple flower spikes when mature No soil required - perfect for unique mounting and display options Relatively easy care makes it ideal for both beginners and experienced air plant enthusiasts This plant is large, displaying 70 cm in width and 60 cm in depth. It is mounted on driftwood and is actively growing. If you need it shipped to you, please note that it will only fit in an XL parcel box, which incurs a postage cost of around $65. Care Information Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal, with some morning sun being beneficial. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves, but ensure adequate brightness for healthy growth. Water: Mist thoroughly 2-3 times per week, or soak for 20-30 minutes once a week. Ensure excellent air circulation after watering to prevent rot, and reduce watering frequency during cooler months. Humidity: Optimal humidity ranges from 50-70%. Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal issues whilst maintaining adequate moisture levels. Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 15-27°C, with a minimum of 10°C. Protect from frost and extreme temperature fluctuations. Soil: No soil required - this is an epiphytic air plant that absorbs nutrients and moisture through its leaves. Support: Mount on driftwood, cork bark, or display in hanging arrangements. Ensure good air circulation around the entire plant. Fertiliser: Feed monthly with diluted GT Foliage applied as a mist during the growing season. Toxicity: This plant is non-toxic and safe around children and pets.
