The Tillandsia diguetii is a fascinating air plant native to the coastal regions of northwestern Mexico where it grows as an epiphyte on trees and rocks. This distinctive species was first described by botanist Mez in 1896 and belongs to the subgenus Tillandsia, characterised by its unique bulbous base and twisted, ribbon-like leaves that distinguish it from its close relative, Tillandsia streptophylla. Unlike streptophylla which has a more pronounced pseudobulb and tighter leaf spirals, diguetii features a smaller, less swollen base with longer, more loosely twisted grey-green leaves that create a more open, fountain-like appearance.
Why You'll Love It
- Distinctive bulbous base with long, twisted ribbon-like leaves
- More open growth form compared to the tighter spirals of T. streptophylla
- Produces stunning pink and purple flower spikes
- Hardy coastal species that tolerates varied conditions
- Creates dramatic sculptural displays when mounted
Care Information
Light:
Bright, indirect light with some direct morning sun. More tolerant of direct sunlight than many air plants.
Water:
Mist 2-3 times per week or soak for 20-30 minutes weekly. Allow water to drain from the bulbous base to prevent rot.
Humidity:
Thrives in 50-70% humidity with excellent air circulation around the bulbous base.
Temperature:
15-27°C, minimum 10°C. More tolerant of temperature fluctuations than most air plants.
Mounting:
Mount on driftwood or cork bark, ensuring the bulbous base has excellent drainage and air circulation.
Fertiliser:
Feed monthly with diluted GT Foliage applied as a mist during the growing season.
Toxicity:
Non-toxic and safe around children and pets.
