Ficus villosa
Ficus villosa is an unusual climbing fig prized for its soft, velvety foliage and distinctive growth habit. New leaves often emerge in warm reddish-bronze tones before gradually deepening to rich green, creating a beautiful contrast between new and mature growth.
When provided with a rough, moist support, the plant uses its aerial roots to climb and spread across the surface. Its juvenile leaves may grow closely against the support, while established plants can develop increasingly large and impressive foliage. A moss pole, cork panel or terrarium background allows its natural climbing habit to be fully appreciated.
Textural, uncommon and highly rewarding, Ficus villosa is an excellent choice for collectors looking for an alternative to more commonly grown climbing figs. It performs particularly well in warm, humid environments with consistent moisture and good airflow.
Light: Bright indirect light; protect from harsh direct sunlight
Water: Keep the potting mix lightly moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings; avoid waterlogged conditions
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity with good airflow
Growth Habit: Root-climbing vine that benefits from a moss pole, cork panel or other textured vertical support
Common names: Shaggy Leaf Fig, Shaggy-leaved Fig, Villous Fig, Hairy Fig, Climbing Fig.
Each plant is unique and may vary slightly in size, shape, colour, maturity and growth habit.
