Sphagnum Propagation Mix

Urban Jungle Sydney Sphagnum Moss + Perlite Propagation Mix combines approximately 75% sphagnum moss and 25% coarse perlite to create a light propagation medium that holds moisture while maintaining air around developing roots.

Sphagnum moss is widely used for rooting and propagation because it can stay moist around developing roots without behaving like a dense potting mix. Adding coarse perlite opens the medium further, improving drainage and creating additional air spaces through the mix.

I like this type of medium for cuttings that respond well to a consistently humid root zone, particularly aroids and plants being rooted from nodes, stem sections or small cuttings.

How to use

Moisten the mix before use so that the sphagnum is evenly damp but not dripping wet. Position the cutting or node in the medium and maintain consistent moisture while roots develop.

Avoid keeping the mix permanently saturated. Good ventilation is particularly important when propagating in enclosed or high-humidity conditions.

Once a strong root system has formed and the plant begins establishing active growth, transfer it into a suitable longer-term potting mix.
